Phytocannabinoids and MS

(−)-Β-CARYOPHYLLENE, A CB2 RECEPTOR-SELECTIVE PHYTOCANNABINOID, SUPPRESSES MOTOR PARALYSIS AND NEUROINFLAMMATION IN A MURINE MODEL OF MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS

(−)-β-caryophyllene (BCP), a functional non-psychoactive CB2 receptor agonist , is found in, for example, plant-derived oleoresins, essential oils, solutes, distillates, extracts, fermentations, infusions, and leachates, from several plants . Furthermore, BCP showed analgesic, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, anti-depressive, anxiolytic, and anti-nephrotoxicity effects . In addition, several studies support the evidence that cannabimimetic drugs, mainly CB2 ligands, might have therapeutic potential in numerous pathologies, including demyelinating diseases . Cannabinoids, including phytocannabinoids, have the ability to downregulate leucocytes proliferation, promote both T cells and macrophages apoptosis, and also diminish secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines. This confers to cannabinoids potent inflammatory and immunomodulatory activity.
